Nipping is a natural developmental stage for every puppy. Without hands to explore their surroundings, pups use their mouths to interact with the world. While this behavior is often a request for attention or a sign of excess energy, it can be managed effectively through positive redirection rather than physical punishment.
At MadKat Dog Training LLC, we emphasize that hitting, kneeing, or punishing a dog for nipping is counterproductive. Instead, we recommend channeling that “wild” energy into these three productive outlets:
1. Redirect with Focused Training
A focused dog is a well-behaved dog. When your puppy begins to nip, immediately transition into a short training session. Using small treats or their daily kibble, practice commands like “sit,” “look at me,” or “come.” By rewarding positive actions, you fill the “behavioral void” and teach them that calm focus—not nipping—is the fastest way to get your attention.
2. Engage in Structured Play
Many behavioral issues stem from instincts that aren’t being met, such as hunting or herding. You can simulate these activities safely by:
- Using a Flirt Pole: This tool is a lifesaver for burning high-intensity energy quickly.
- Long-Leash Games: Use a 20–30 ft lead to play fetch, allowing them freedom while maintaining control.
- Mental Stimulation: Puzzles and brain games can tire a puppy out as much as a long walk. Remember: A tired dog is a happy owner!

Happy Training!
