With the 4th of July Celebration just around the corner—marking the 250th Anniversary of the U.S.—the festivities will be livelier than ever! With the help of American Pet Professionals, here are some essential safety tips to keep your pets safe this weekend.
Identification & Preparedness
- Check collars: Ensure your pet has their ID securely attached.
- Update info: Make sure phone numbers on tags and microchip registrations are current.
- Take a photo: Keep a recent photo of your pet on hand in case they get lost.
- Save emergency contacts: Put your local vet and a 24/7 ER vet’s number in your phone.
- Plan for vacation: If traveling, pre-search the nearest 24/7 ER vet at your destination.
Home Security & Comfort
- Create a sanctuary: Give pets a quiet, safe room away from the noise.
- Block out disturbances: Close windows, draw blinds, and run an A/C, white noise machine, TV, or radio.
- Secure exits: Check all gates and doors to ensure your pet cannot escape if spooked.
- Adjust bathroom breaks: Lay down wee-wee pads if your pet gets too scared to go outside later in the day.
Event & Party Hazards
- Skip the fireworks: Do not bring pets to shows. Even “calm” pets can panic from close-range explosions.
- Watch the grill: Keep pets away from hot grills to prevent severe burns.
- Secure the pool: Keep pool gates closed so pets do not accidentally fall in. Even a pet that can swim can get spooked and panic
- Avoid table scraps: Do not feed pets barbecue remnants or any foods they are not used to. Scared with a tummy issue? Not a good combination.
Exercise & Weather Safety
- Exercise early: Walk and play with your dog during daylight hours before fireworks start.
- Test the pavement: Use the 7-Second Asphalt Rule. Press the back of your hand to the ground for 7 seconds. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for their paws.
Anxiety Management
- Consult your vet: Discuss prescription anti-anxiety meds early if your pet has severe noise phobias.
- Try calming gear: Consider calming collars or pressure wraps like anxiety shirts.
- No human medication: Never give pets over-the-counter or human medications without veterinary approval.
Enjoy the beautiful holiday weekend and keep your pets and children safe!
Happy Training!
